Amar (transl. "Immortal") is a 1954 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film produced and directed by Mehboob Khan. [2] Dealing with the controversial subject of rape, the film revolves around the titular upper-class lawyer (Dilip Kumar), his feminist fiancé, the social worker Anju Roy (), and Sonia (), a poor milkmaid.
[9] [10] She afterwards played an author-backed role in Mehboob Khan's romantic drama Amar (1954) and produced the social film Naata (1955)—in which she also acted—but both the films proved to be financially unsuccessful, [11] [12] which led the press to label her "box office poison". [13]
This love triangle at the time of its release was the highest-grossing Indian film ever. The 1950s saw Kumar in a number of popular films playing a variety of roles. Kumar won the first-ever Filmfare Award in the Best Actor category for his performance in 1954 release Daag.
Mirza Ghalib, a film based on the life of well-known poet Mirza Ghalib, directed by Sohrab Modi and starring Bharat Bhushan and Suraiya went on to win the Golden Lotus Award for National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1955.
