On November 21, 1923 the first Hotel Montague burned down. The Caro Board of Commerce, realizing the need for a hotel in town, began planning to construct a replacement structure almost immediately. By late December they were reviewing plans from Saginaw architects Cowles & Mutscheller, and by March 1924 had gathered funds to build the hotel.
