Lake Moultrie was created in the early 1940s by the South Carolina Public Service Authority. It was formed by construction of Pinopolis Dam as part of a flood control and hydroelectric power project. It didn't dam the Cooper River but a tributary created by the damming of the Santee River on Lake Marion. [2] It covers about 60,000 acres (240 km 2).

In 1939, the Santee Cooper Project dammed the Santee River, flooding nearly 175,000 acres (710 km 2) and creating Lake Moultrie with the Pinopolis Dam in 1946. Because of its high elevation, Pinopolis was spared from the flooding, and now exists as a peninsula on the lake.

Santee Cooper Country is a tourism district in the south central area of the U.S. state of South Carolina. It surrounds the Santee Cooper Lakes, Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion, which were formed from damming the Santee River and the Cooper River. This tourism district was created by the state legislature in 1962. [1]
