The Great Smoky Mountains National Park covers a total of 522,419 acres (816.280 sq mi; 211,415 ha; 2,114.15 km 2) The park is roughly evenly divided between Tennessee and North Carolina, and is located within portions of Blount, Sevier, and Cocke Counties in Tennessee, and Swain and Haywood Counties in North Carolina. Spence Field is a mountain highland meadow in the Great Smoky Mountains, located in the Southeastern United States. It has an elevation of 4,920 feet (1,500 m) above sea level. [ 1 ] The Appalachian Trail traverses the field, and a backcountry shelter just off the trail provides an overnight stopover for through-hikers.
Backcountry campsites are located along the Caldwell Fork Trail, Rough Creek Trail, and Pretty Hollow Gap Trail. In 2001, the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center was established at Purchase Knob (atop Cataloochee Divide) on land donated to the park by Kathryn McNeil and Voit Gilmore the previous year.
The park's facilities include 32 campsites and 20 rental cabins. The campsites come with electric and water hookups and have both picnic tables and grills. The parking lot at the Jakes Creek Trailhead is very small and fills up quickly in the warmer months. Backcountry Campsite 20 is approximately 1.9 miles (3.1 km) from the Meigs Mountain Trailhead (2.3 miles from the nearest parking lot); Backcountry Campsite 19 is approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from the trailhead.
