District 1 and the other seven districts of Ho Chi Minh City were founded on May 27, 1959. Before 1975, the first district only had four small subsets (wards) which were Bến Nghé, Hòa Bình, Trần Quang Khải and Tự Đức (named after major historical characters), and the second district had seven different wards which were Bến Thành, Bùi Viện, Cầu Kho, Cầu Ông Lãnh ...
This district has a total area of 4.92 km 2 [1] [2] and borders District 1, Phú Nhuận District, District 10 and Tân Bình District. It is the location of Xá Lợi Pagoda, the largest in the city. The Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda is also located in District 3. There are many French-style villas in this district.
The first performance of opera in Haiphong was held by a travelling troupe in the Hotel des Colonies in 1888. [2] [3] Later, in 1895–1897, a touring French opera company in Indochina, featuring Alexandra David-Néel as prima donna toured Haiphong with La Traviata and Carmen. [4]
It is abbreviated as TP.HCM, and translated in English as Ho Chi Minh City, abbreviated as HCMC, and in French as Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville (the circumflex is sometimes omitted), abbreviated as HCMV. The name commemorates Ho Chi Minh, the first leader of North Vietnam. This name, though not his given name, was one he favored throughout his later years.
Haiphong or Hai Phong (Vietnamese: Hải Phòng) is the third-largest city in Vietnam and is the principal port city of the Red River Delta. [6] The municipality has an area of 1,526.52 km 2 (589.39 sq mi), [ 1 ] consisting of 8 urban districts , 6 rural districts and 1 municipal city (sub-city).
The park is surrounded by Cach Mang Thang 8 Street, Bac Hai Street, and Truong Son Street, covering an area of approximately 8 hectares (20 acres) in District 10, opposite of District 3. [5] Queen of the Rosary Cathedral in Hai Phong has been assigned as the Cathedral of the diocese. [6] Many migrant workers from other regions of Vietnam, who work in that busy port city, attend masses in Hai Phong. [4]
Lê Hồng Phong, together with High School for the Gifted (Phổ Thông Năng Khiếu) and Trần Đại Nghĩa High School, make up the Big 3 of "Highly selective" schools (trường chuyên) in Hồ Chí Minh City and in Southern Vietnam, having achieved significant numbers of awards in both domestic and international academic competitions.
