The Fleet-class unmanned surface vessel, also called the Common Unmanned Surface Vessel (CUSV) and later the Mine Countermeasures Unmanned Surface Vehicle (MCM USV), [2] is an unmanned surface vessel designed for the United States Navy to be deployed from Freedom and Independence-class littoral combat ships [3] and intended to conduct mine and anti-submarine warfare missions.
The AN/AQS-20A is a sonar mine countermeasure detection system, developed by Raytheon. The system was initially tested for use on the MH-60S and MH-53E helicopters and as part of the mission package for the littoral combat ships (LCS) and some United States Navy destroyers of the Arleigh Burke class.
The new SSC would now focus on anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, with mine countermeasures handled by existing LCSs. It would retain the ability to carry mission modules and LCS mission package equipment, including 30 mm and 57 mm cannons, Hellfire missiles, 11-meter (36 ft) RHIBs, and the ASW variable-depth sonar.
It has a low signature (magnetic and acoustic) which would prevent a mine from being triggered. The vessel is also designed to be unsinkable. [18] Its mission is focused on communications and deployment of the drones. [4] This vessel can be deployed from the mission bay by a handling system. [29]
The Exelis MK 105 Mod 4 system will provide significant reliability and performance improvements, increasing the U.S. Navy's capability to conduct quick response, high-speed airborne mine ...
The trimaran Independence-class has had fewer problems, boasts a large flight deck supporting up to two helicopters, and will begin integrating specialized counter-mine warfare mission packages ...
Mine Avoidance: In addition to direct mine countermeasures, MCMVs might also work in conjunction with other naval assets to help ships navigate around known or suspected minefields. Lithuanian MCMV Ship. These vessels are typically equipped with advanced navigation, communication, and data processing systems to effectively carry out their mission.
In the early 1980s, the U.S. Navy began development of a new mine countermeasures (MCM) force, which included two new classes of ships and minesweeping helicopters. The vital importance of a state-of-the-art mine countermeasures force was strongly underscored in the Persian Gulf during the eight years of the Iran–Iraq War, and in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991 when ...
