Once the largest town (1895-1900) on the western coast of Canada, [citation needed] Shoal Bay was a hub for mining and forestry. Gold was mined in the hillsides above the town and the surrounding areas. When mining slowed in the early 20th century there was a shift towards timber and fishing.
Anthony Island is noted for being the location of the ruins of SkungWai or SG̱ang Gwaay Llnaagay, commonly called Ninstints after the reigning mid-19th Century chief there. SG̱ang Gwaay Llnagaay was a major village of the Kunghit Haida people. [1] Anthony Island is part of the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site.
