The 83rd Chemical Battalion was formerly the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion, which fought with the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Ranger Battalions in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy until those three battalions were destroyed during Operation Shingle. They were part of the 6615th Ranger Force which also included the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion.

The 22nd Infantry Brigade was formed by the redesignation of the 29th Infantry Brigade on 3 September 1939 and in March 1940 became responsible for all the troops in the Mersa Matruh Garrison area. In February 1941 the unit was reformed and renamed the 22nd Guards Brigade on 20 March 1941.
The battalion was officially inactivated by orders effective 1 September 1997 along with the brigade. [4] The current battalion was constituted 1 September 2005 in the Illinois Army National Guard as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 44th Chemical Battalion, and three years later organized and Federally recognized on 5 August 2008. [5]
