Shelton Cabraal, FRCS is known as the father of neurosurgery in Sri Lanka. In 1956 he formed the first organised neurosurgery unit in the country. The unit was located in the General Hospital Colombo (present National Hospital of Sri Lanka). It is said that this unit was an up-to-date unit at the time.
He holds the honour of performing the surgery for cervical disc prolapse of the spine and replacement with functional discs for the first time in Sri Lanka. [citation needed] Gunasena is the first Sri Lankan Neurosurgeon to perform Balloon Kyphoplasty surgery for spinal code fractures. [7]
He is the Patron of the Association of Sri Lankan Neurologists (ASN) and the National Stroke Association of Sri Lanka. He was past President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association in 1994 and Ceylon College of Physicians from 1987 to 1988., [13] as well as past President of the Rotary Club of Colombo West and Sri Lanka – United Kingdom Society.
In 2005, VIMHANS treated a 43-year-old female patient. The patient suffered a partial paralysis and was admitted to the hospital. During the treatment, the hospital staff mistakenly administered a high dose of steroids into the right arm of the patient. The arm immediately began swelling, the doctors advised that it was not dangerous.

The paper was bought by a company owned by the European Association of Ceylon in 1920. [8] D. R. Wijewardena bought the paper in 1923, adding it to his growing media empire (later known as Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited). [9] A Sunday edition of the paper, the Sunday Observer, commenced on 4 February 1928. [10]
