Shirley Ritts (October 28, 1920 – February 24, 2008) was an American interior designer whose company helped to popularize rattan furniture in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. [1] Ritts was the mother of photographer and music video director , Herb Ritts (August 13, 1952 – December 26, 2002).
Both firms produced wicker and rattan furniture, and as these products became increasingly popular towards the end of the century, they became serious rivals. The company would merge with Mueller Furniture Corporation, becoming Widdicomb-Mueller Corporation, in 1950. Ten years later Mueller would split from Widdicomb. In 1970, the company name is acquired by John Widdicomb Company. [2] From 1943 until 1956, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings served as designer for the company, designing Modern furniture.
The Wakefield Rattan Company was the world's leading manufacturer of rattan furniture and objects in the second half of the 19th century. Founded by Cyrus Wakefield in 1851 in South Reading, Massachusetts (now Wakefield ), it perfected machinery for working with rattan, developing looms for weaving chair seats and mats.
Kittinger Company furniture was used extensively in the redesign since this company was the sole licensee of furniture for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's famous program to produce exact reproductions of 18th century antiques.
