On 4 February 1899, FV Werder Bremen was founded by a group of 16-year-old students who had won a football in a tug of war tournament. [4] The name "Werder" is the German word for "river peninsula ", alluding to the riverside field on which the team played their first football matches.

Werder have won the Bundesliga four times. The club have also won the DFB-Pokal six times, and have won one European title, the Cup Winner's Cup in 1992. Bremen have been relegated twice, in 1979–80 and 2020–21; on both occasions, they were promoted back to the first tier at the first attempt.
