In the late 1970s, Joe Shanahan, having experienced the art, music and dance culture in New York City, created a club to host creative acts in Chicago. [3] Shanahan was directed to the Northside Auditorium Building. The building was originally built in 1927 as a Swedish Community Center. [4]

Joe Norris (17 March 1925 – 8 March 1996) was a Canadian folk artist who painted images of his environment in Lower Prospect, Nova Scotia and places he learned about through television in crisp shapes, strong design and bright colour. He created wall paintings and painted furniture as well as models of villages, boats and lighthouses.
In the early 2000s, ShanghART Gallery started to move into the emerging art district at 50 Moganshan Road where many of their artists have rented studios at.
