The suburb of Esperance is the central business district of the town of Esperance, in the Shire of Esperance, Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Nulsen is a western suburb of Esperance, a town in south-eastern Western Australia. Its local government area is the Shire of Esperance . The suburb was gazetted in 1971, initially including the entire neighbouring suburb of Sinclair , which was separated in 1985.
Two weeks later, on 27 September 1895, the township of Esperance separated from the road district as the Municipality of Esperance. The municipality was re-absorbed into the road district on 30 October 1908. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire of Esperance under the Local Government Act 1960, which reformed all remaining road districts into shires.
Esperance also has a number of wind turbines supplying electricity to the town. [29] Esperance had the first electrical wind farm in Australia, built at Salmon Beach as a research facility in 1987. In October 2020, a surfer who was a member of the local community in Esperance was killed by a shark at Wylie Bay near the town. [30]
