Prince Nikolai Galitzin commissioned the first three quartets (12, 13 and 15) and in a letter dated 9 November 1822, offered to pay Beethoven "what you think proper" for them. Beethoven replied on 25 January 1823 with his price of 50 ducats for each opus. [ 4 ]

On January 11, 1975, the Beethoven Quartet premiered the work in Moscow, [15] with cellist Yevgeny Altman replacing Shirinsky. [ 11 ] The first performance outside the Soviet Union took place in Coventry , England on March 11, 1975, at the University of Warwick 's Arts Centre ; the work was performed by the Fitzwilliam Quartet . [ 16 ]
The String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135, by Ludwig van Beethoven was written in October 1826 [1] and was the last major work he completed. Only the final movement of the Quartet Op. 130, written as a replacement for the Große Fuge, was composed later. Beethoven dedicated the composition to his patron and admirer, Johann Nepomuk Wolfmayer.
