The Lotus 900 series is a family of internal combustion engines designed and built by Lotus Cars of United Kingdom. Successor to the Lotus-Ford Twin Cam, the 900 was the first complete engine developed by Lotus. The engine was built from 1972 to 1999. [1]
The Lotus 907 was the first production variant of the Lotus 900 series engine. It was first installed in the Jensen-Healey, making it the initial production car to feature the 907 engine. When Vauxhall unveiled its new slant-four engine at the 1967 Earls Court Motor Show, the bore centres of the engine were identical to those proposed by Lotus.
The mid-engine line continued with the Lotus Esprit, which became one of the company's longest-lived and most iconic models. Lotus developed its own series of four-cylinder DOHC engines, the Lotus 900 series, and later a V8, and turbocharged versions of the engines appeared in the Esprit.

The Lotus 900 series of engines replaced the Twin Cam in Lotus' cars after 1973. Vegantune developed their own DOHC cylinder head on the Ford block for an engine called the VTA launched in 1983. Supplied to Caterham Cars as a replacement for the Twin Cam in the Caterham Seven, the VTA featured belt-driven cams. [1]
