The Catoctin Creek Distilling Company (/ k ə ˈ t ɒ k t ən / kə-TOK-tən), which operates under the trade name of Catoctin Creek, is the first legal distillery in Loudoun County, Virginia, since prohibition. The distillery was founded in 1927 by Seager Evans and Co. The first spirit was produced in 1928. [1]The company was acquired by Schenley Industries of New York in 1956, who invested heavily in the site, including the addition of a Single malt whisky branded Kinclaith, which started producing in 1958. Virginia Gentleman's producer, A. Smith Bowman Distillery, was founded in 1934 [2] by Abram Smith Bowman and his sons, Smith and DeLong. It was originally based on the Bowman family's Sunset Hills Farm in Fairfax County, Virginia, in what later became the planned community of Reston.
The Auchentoshan distillery was built in 1823. [4] [8] The original distillery was built by a corn merchant named John Bulloch and managed with his son. [4]Following their bankruptcy in 1834, the distillery was sold to Alexander Filshie, a local farmer and it remained under control of his family until 1877, following a bad harvest when it was sold again to several owners. [4]
The distillery manager is Alistair McDonald who was the former distillery manager of the Auchentoshan distillery. [10] [11] In 2020, the distillery was awarded Whisky Distillery of the Year in the annual Scottish Whisky Awards. [12] in 2021, Clydeside released its first single malt whisky, Stobcross matured in American and European oak casks. [13]
