The New Design Series was the name used to refer to Philippine banknotes issued from 1985 to 1993. It was then renamed as the BSP Series due to the re-establishment of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in 1993. It was succeeded by the New Generation Currency Series conceptualized from 2007 to 2010 and issued since December 16, 2010.
In 2017, an updated version of the New Generation series 100 piso banknote was issued with changes in the font size of the year of issue and the italicization of the scientific name on the reverse side. Philippine president and former House Speaker Sergio Osmeña is currently featured on the front side of the bill, while the Taal Lake and the giant trevally (known locally as maliputo) are featured on the reverse side.
Because of this, it is the only banknote in the New Design/BSP Series to do not feature the printing year as it was only implemented in 1997 (10-peso notes) and 1998 (rest of the banknotes in the series) when production for the five peso note was already stopped two to three years earlier. [16]
