The River Stour (/ ˈ s t ʊər, ˈ s t aʊər /, pronounced rhyming with either "tour" or "sour") [1] is a major river in East Anglia, England. It is 47 miles (76 km) long [ 2 ] and forms most of the county boundary between Suffolk to the north, and Essex to the south.
The Stour valley has produced rich evidence for early human (Palaeolithic) activity. Gravel pits in the lower reaches of the river (many underlying modern day Bournemouth) produced hundreds of Lower Palaeolithic handaxes when they were quarried, particular during the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.
