Edinboro University was founded as the Edinboro Academy, a private training school for Pennsylvania teachers in 1857, by the region's original Scottish settlers.It is the oldest training institution west of the Allegheny Mountains and the second-oldest in Pennsylvania.
On June 24, 1838, a division was effected, whereby the old township was constituted into two townships, to be separately and distinctly recognized as East Donegal and West Donegal. The settlers of East Donegal were of Scots-Irish descent and were primarily farmers who were drawn to the area by the rich soils and plentiful streams.
It is home to the Edinboro Fighting Scots of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The stadium is named for B. Regis "Sox" Harrison, who served as the head football coach at Edinboro from 1926 to 1938 and 1941-42 before being inducted into the university's Athletic Hall of Fame. The stadium was officially opened in 1965.
It is accessible by Routes 632 (Waverly Exit #197), 524 (Scott Exit #199), and 438 (East Benton Exit #201). This major thoroughfare places Scott Township at an approximate two-hour drive from important markets like New York City, Philadelphia, state capital Harrisburg, and Syracuse, New York.
Scott Township has nine land borders, including the Pittsburgh neighborhood of East Carnegie and Green Tree to the north, the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Banksville to the northeast, Mt. Lebanon to the east, Upper St. Clair Township to the south, Bridgeville to the southwest, Collier Township and Heidelberg to the west, and Carnegie to the northwest.
The university is accessible from Interstate 80, U.S. Route 209, and PA Route 33. Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono , the area's primary medical facility, is located on the edge of the campus. The 62 campus buildings are located on 213 acres (0.9 km 2 ) in the East Stroudsburg community.
The 1961 Edinboro Fighting Scots football team represented Edinboro State College (now known as Edinboro University of Pennsylvania) of Edinboro, Pennsylvania.
