Dots per inch. A close-up of the dots produced by an inkjet printer at draft quality. Actual size is approximately 1⁄4 by 1⁄4 inch (6 by 6 mm). Individual coloured droplets of ink are visible; this sample is about 150 DPI. Dots per inch ( DPI, or dpi [1]) is a measure of spatial printing, video or image scanner dot density, in particular ...
This chart shows the most common display resolutions, with the color of each resolution type indicating the display ratio (e.g. red indicates a 4:3 ratio). For a more in depth discussion of resolutions, see Display resolution standards .
Image resolution is the level of detail of an image. The term applies to digital images, film images, and other types of images. "Higher resolution" means more image detail. Image resolution can be measured in various ways. Resolution quantifies how close lines can be to each other and still be visibly resolved.
However, even if both techniques have inherent noise, it is widely appreciated that for color, digital photography has much less noise/grain than film at equivalent sensitivity, leading to an edge in image quality. [10] For black-and-white photography, grain takes a more positive role in image quality, and such comparisons are less valid.
Color photography is photography that uses media capable of capturing and reproducing colors. By contrast, black-and-white or gray- monochrome photography records only a single channel of luminance (brightness) and uses media capable only of showing shades of gray . In color photography, electronic sensors or light-sensitive chemicals record ...
(* The pixel number of 6,000x4,000 ist the number of "effective pixels". The sensor usually has a few extra rows of pixels on all four sides, which explains the sensor resolution of 24.3 MPixels often stated, but no information about the exact image size available.) 6,016 4,000 24,064,000 24.1 Nikon D3300 Canon M50: 6,048 4,032 24,385,536 24.4
Scanners and cameras. "PPI" or "pixel density" may also describe image scanner resolution. In this context, PPI is synonymous with samples per inch. In digital photography, pixel density is the number of pixels divided by the area of the sensor. A typical DSLR, circa 2013, has 1–6.2 MP/cm 2; a typical compact has 20–70 MP/cm 2 .
Lines per inch ( LPI) is a measurement of printing resolution. A line consists of halftones that is built up by physical ink dots made by the printer device to create different tones. Specifically LPI is a measure of how close together the lines in a halftone grid are. The quality of printer device or screen determines how high the LPI will be.
