It is becoming more difficult to get these types of jobs without a foundation and experience of medical coding and to even take the assessment exam your hospital would check your experience.

The main difference at the time I took them, the CCS-P had a lot of I-9 diagnostic (not procedural) and some CPT 4. The CPC was very strong on CPT with some HCPCS and I-9 diagnostic. The hospital I work for has 7 coders, 3 are RHIT, one is CCS, 3 of us are CPC, and one is CPC-H. So, there's a wide variety. The inpatient coders do have RHIT and/or CCS certs.
