Sync has not been updated since the original owner took delivery 8 years ago and is currently running version 3.1. I'm thinking it is trying to download version 4.4 which was pulled from the website because it had ongoing issues.
Looks like the guys at Infotainment.com have an APIM upgrade option to give 2019-2020 F-150 Sync 4 with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. They also have a Nav option. ($200 more) Also supports factory installed SiriusXM radios. Currently they only have the upgrade for trucks with manual A/C controls.
1) If you add extra pages of preset stations beyond the default 2 pages, Sync4 will forget the pages you added upon restart. 2) Sync4 periodically gets confused when wirelessly connected to Android Auto, loses connection, will not reconnect until vehicle is restarted. Workaround is to connect with a USB cable.
Sync 4 updates are done either OTA or via a signed package on USB, so you can't just download the update files and install them like Sync 3. Technically if you were content with a non-nav setup that never gets updates, and don't use the hotspot functionality, a swap would work just fine with the necessary AsBuilt changes.

Keep in mind car technology doesn't advance like regular technology. Cars use significantly older tech. Minus a couple of manufacturers, most notably being Tesla and Rivian.

A few years ago I installed a Sync 3 APIM from a 2017 Fusion and it is working psefectly. I would like to upgrade to Sync 4 mainly to get wireless carplay. I can get a APIM out of a 2021 F150 that is for a 8" screen, non-nav.
If you root either device however, it's possible... it is not an issue of legality as in it is illegal to stream movies on a vehicle's screen. It is more of a liability issue for the manufacturer.
