The indices are one-based (meaning the first is number one), inclusive (meaning the indices you specify are included), and may be negative to count from the other end. The Rabin–Karp algorithm proceeds by computing, at each position of the text, the hash value of a string starting at that position with the same length as the pattern. If this hash value equals the hash value of the pattern, it performs a full comparison at that position.
The Template:Str_number/trim extracts a number at the start of parameter 1. It takes a string as parameter, and returns the string trimmed to the beginning number if non-numeric text does not appear before the first number.
If string is not found, it outputs zero (0). The word "short" in the title is a relic of the pre- Lua implementation and has no meaning for the current version. This template is a simple wrapper around {{ #invoke:string |find}}, which may be used directly for more options.
