The song in 10 stanzas was first published in 1667 in the collection Pauli Gerhardi Geistliche-Andachten (Spiritual devotions by Paul Gerhardt) of songs by Gerhardt.

Then Sings My Soul is a 2009 inspirational double CD album recorded by country music singer Ronnie Milsap.To date, it is his first and only gospel recording ever. It features several traditional hymns along with Christian-altered hit singles, including Milsap's "What a Difference You've Made in My Life" and Ben E. King's "Stand by Me".
The song is a contemporary version of a classic worship song making the case for "10,000 reasons for my heart to find" to praise God. The inspiration for the song came through the opening verse of Psalm 103: "Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name".
