The most numerous populations of working purebred livestock guarding Karakachan dogs are found in Bulgaria and the United States. The Karakachan was officially recognised as a Bulgarian native breed in 2005. They are part of the origin of the Bulgarian Shepherd, but should not be confused as the same breed.
It originates from the shepherd dogs of the ancient Thracians and Asian Livestock guardian dogs of the proto-Bulgarians. Karakachan people had bred this dog conservatively and had formed its present type. Due to its perfect working qualities this breed has been widely used by shepherds in Bulgaria.

This is a beautiful book by Kapka Kassabova where she exquisitely writes about her experiences living with the people of Bulgaria in a remote village where karakachan dogs, sheep and horses still survive, alongside shepherds. Its is a beautiful book where I first learnt about the karakachan dogs.
