Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib is a Sikh place of worship and pilgrimage site in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India. It is devoted to Guru Gobind Singh (1666–1708), the tenth Sikh Guru , and finds mention in Dasam Granth .
It lies around roughly 22 kilometres (14 mi) from Joshimath on NH58 at an altitude of 6,000 feet (1,800 metres). It is the roadhead on the way to Shree Badrinathji yatra - One of the important places of worship of Hindus and the starting point for trekking to Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers. [1]
The roads till Joshimath are a good and has a steep walking trek. The network of major service provider are available.. Going up for 600 meters take left for Valley of flowers after having ticket. Straight up is way to Hemkund Sahib. The Ghangaria is the gateway for Valley of flowers as well as Hemkund Sahib.
The Alaknanda originates at a height of 3641 meters below Balakun peak 16 km. upstream from Badrinath form the two glaciers of Bhagirath Kharak and Satopanth. The two glaciers rise from the eastern slopes of Chaukhamba (7140 meters) peak, Badrinath peak and its satellite peaks. These peaks separates the Gangotri group of glaciers in the west.
The valley has three types of sub-alpine zones as follows: foothills alpine between 3,200 m and 3,500 m which is the upper height limit for trees, lower alpine between 3,500 m and 3,700 m, and higher alpine above 3,700 m.
