The island forms part of the state of Tasmania, and part of the Municipality of Flinders Island local government area. Flinders Island is only one of the many islands included in the Municipal area. Of these islands Flinders Island is the only island with more than one permanent settlement, and is by far the largest in the Furneaux Group.

Strzelecki National Park contains the highest point on Flinders Island, Mount Strzelecki, after which it is named; the park contains multiple hiking trails and scenic peaks. The park also contains scenic beaches that are popular spots for swimming, snorkeling, fishing, and kayaking.

Eventually in 1996, the Flinders Island Aboriginal Association and the Flinders Municipal Council signed an agreement to hand over the Wybalenna site to the Aboriginal community. In April 1999, the Premier of Tasmania formally transferred the title of the ‘Wybalenna Aboriginal Station Historic Site’ to the Flinders Island Aboriginal Community.
