The silicone throughout the tank was 10+ years old and was practically flaking off so i decided to redo the whole tank. I put everything into another smaller tank, drained it, dried it out, then cleaned all the old silicone off. Once that chore was done, i applied a few tubes of new aquarium-safe silicone.

jrmailo said: Yes that is what I have read too. I’m not too worried about the outer seam. But the middle of the silicone has a weird cut-like injury with air traped on the inside. Ya hard to tell from the pic... visually with mine I could see tiny copepods in between things they should not have been in between :/. .

What differentiates Silicone II from Silicone I is the latter is an acetoxy cure silicone, and the former is a neutral cure silicone. Silicone II does not take longer to cure; published cure times are about the same. However the cure times pertain to a specific amount of silicone, usually given in a bead size, generally 1/8" or 1/4".

7500 Club Member. I don't know that one silicone sealant is really any better than another - as long as they're aquarium safe, they should be fine. The one's that I see recommended the most are ASi Clear Aquarium Silicone Sealant, GE Silicone 1, Momentive RTV100, and Aqueon Silicone Sealant.

26,150. Location. Sayreville, NJ. Rating - 0%. 0 0 0. I'm not sure why you'd be using silicone on a pump and return line, but GE Silicone I is reef safe. DO NOT GET GE SILICONE II. Now the other important thing is to let it cure (without water) for at least three days....more if you can wait. May 18, 2016.

Reef Hugger. I used a silicone from Lowes on a sump baffle once; the GE windows and doors type that's apparently aquarium safe, and after a few months of use it turned screaming yellow. Everything in the aquarium looked awesome but it spooked me so I cut it out and used actual black aquarium silicone from LFS.

RTV momentive 108 and 103 are both aquarium safe and arguably the best silicone you can use for building and sealing an aquarium. That or SCS1200 silicone. In comparison to either of these all GE products and “aquarium safe” marineland/perfecto silicones are crap. Here’s a few tanks assembled with scs1200.

malacoda said: If the return bulkhead is vertical -- e.g. in the bottom of your tank -- then you should be fine regardless of whether or not the PVC you're attaching the silicone tubing to is supported by something other than the bulkhead or not.
