The Kofi Annan Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to help build peaceful, democratic and resilient societies. It was founded and legally incorporated in Switzerland in 2007 by the late Kofi Annan, former secretary general of the United Nations.

The prize is awarded to a youth activist between 18-30 years old who exemplifies exceptional leadership, to inspire more young people to commit to the advancement of democracy. The award was established in 2023. The Athens Democracy Forum first partnered with Kofi Annan Foundation in 2017, after Annan attended the forum.
