Until about 1800, Monkstown was a rural area of open countryside, dotted here and there with large houses owned by the merchants of Dublin. The Monkstown Church (Church of Ireland) had been built – but was smaller than the present church. The two small local rivers met in the area now called Pakenham Road.

Monkstown (Irish: Baile an Mhanaigh - 'the town of the monk', formerly anglicised as Ballinvannegh) [1] is a village in County Cork, Ireland, in the old barony of Kerrycurrihy. It lies 14 kilometres southeast of Cork city on the estuary of the River Lee , facing Great Island and looking onto Monkstown Bay.

Woodpark was the name of an old eighteenth-century house which is now part of the Sallynoggin Inn pub. In the 1830s the west side of Sallynoggin Road was lined with low, small-windowed thatched cottages. [3] As of 1988 there were still ruins of some houses, probably built for employees of the Glenageary House estate, standing opposite the pub. [4]

The Dublin City Council acquired the square to develop into a local park on Sept 16, 1975, from the Dublin, Glendalough, and Kildare Diocesan Board of Education for £7500. [ 7 ] [ 8 ] Paths were laid out, grass and shrubs planted, but the shrubs became too dense so were removed and converted to a rolling landscape with grass and trees.
