What should you expect right before surgery? As the day of the procedure arrives, plan to: Follow pre-surgery directions and diet. Unless you’re having only local anesthesia, you may be told not to eat or drink anything after midnight before your procedure.

Before Surgery. Do not eat or drink anything (including gum, mints or candy) two hours before your arrival time. Teeth may be brushed. Do not consume alcohol 24 hours prior to surgery. You can drink up to 8 ounces of absolutely clear liquids (i.e. black coffee or tea no cream or sugar) up to 2 hours before your arrival time.
Follow any specific preoperative bathing, shaving, or cleaning instructions. Discuss any postoperative instructions that need to be followed (for example, changing dressings, post-op medicines, follow-up appointments). Purchase any needed supplies or fill your prescriptions ahead of time. Don't wear makeup the day of surgery, including nail polish.
