The school was initially founded in the year 1934. The school was erected by students and was named after the father to the first republican President of Zambia Reverend David Kaunda who was a missionary and teacher from Nyasaland (now Malawi). As of January 2022, the school is currently headed by Ms. Maureen Mwape Tonga.
During Northern Rhodesian times, the school was known as Prince Philip Secondary School, and was the only school for Asian students. [2] At the time, its hostels (dormitories) were some of the highest buildings in the city. It has since developed into a multiracial, multicultural school, with Christian, Hindu, and Muslim students. [3]
Lusaka West Secondary School was established in 2000, under the Republic of Zambia education Act. The school opened its doors on 15 January 2007 with nine students. By the end of the year the number had grown to more than 60. The school has a capacity of 300 students.
