It is a public hospital affiliated to the University of Malta, offering general and specialist services.
Saint James Capua Hospital is a private hospital located in Sliema, Malta. The hospital was founded in 1996 as the Capua Palace Hospital, named for the Palazzo Capua on whose former gardens the hospital was constructed. In 2002 the hospital was taken over by Saint James Hospital Group, which owns other hospitals in Malta, Libya and Hungary. [1]
Prior to the opening of Mount Carmel Hospital, Malta's mentally-ill patients had been housed in a lunatic asylum at Villa Franconi in Floriana which had opened in 1835. This asylum became overcrowded by the mid-19th century, and by 1851 the Commissioners of Charitable Institutions and the Visiting Physician were recommending its relocation.

By the late 1940s the hospital assumed its role as a general hospital with facilities for treating general medical, surgical, gynaecological and paediatric cases. In 1948 the radiology department was opened. The hospital building is included in the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands. [2]
