Jefferson County was organized on July 29, 1797, by proclamation of Governor Arthur St. Clair, six years before Ohio was granted statehood. Its boundaries were originally quite large, including all of northeastern Ohio east of the Cuyahoga River, but it was divided and redrawn several times before assuming its present-day boundaries in 1833, after the formation of neighboring Carroll County.
As of the census [3] of 2000, there were 294 people, 106 households, and 85 families living in the village. The population density was 1,014.4 inhabitants per square mile (391.7/km 2).
The community of Somersville was laid in 1834 by Thomas Price and William Somers. [3] The Bokes Creek Post Office was established April 26, 1850, [4] with Amon S. Davis as postmaster, [3] and was discontinued on June 30, 1904. [4]
He purchased a plot of land on the west side of Third Street from Bezaleel Wells, founder of Steubenville, and built a two-story log cabin as home and office. [6] In 1809, it was moved and 12 years later encased in a brick structure, where it was discovered in 1940, and preserved by citizens of Jefferson County, Ohio. [6]
As of the census [5] of 2000, there were 296 people, 103 households, and 77 families living in the village. The population density was 799.3 people per square mile (308.9/km 2).
