Salem was settled in the 17th century as part of Methuen, Massachusetts, and was incorporated in 1750, after the border between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was fixed, dividing that town. The Salem Common was laid out about 1741, not far from the original location of the building now known as the Old Town Hall.

North Salem is a section of the town of Salem in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States. It occupies the northernmost portion of the town and is located at the northern end of Arlington Mill Reservoir. Although there are some shops and other businesses, it is mostly a residential area.
The western terminus of the route is in the center of Salem at New Hampshire Route 28 (Broadway). The eastern terminus is at the Massachusetts state line, where the road continues east as Massachusetts Route 97 and continues on to Haverhill. NH 97 is named Main Street along its entire length. The entire route is in Salem, Rockingham County. [3] [4]
The Circumferential Highway has been planned since the 1950s, [2] as the need for such a road has been apparent for a long time. To date, however, only a short 2-mile (3.2 km) segment has been built. One of the major provisions of the plan for the highway is to provide a new crossing over the Merrimack River. [2]
