The Great Wicomico River Light was a lighthouse located at the mouth of the Great Wicomico River, south of the Potomac River on the western side of the Chesapeake Bay. It was first lit in 1889 and was deactivated in 1967.

The first lighthouse in the state was erected in 1792 (the first Cape Henry Light) and it is the oldest surviving structure; the last, Chesapeake Light, was built in 1965 (ignoring automated towers erected later). The tallest extant tower is that at Cape Charles Light.

The structure gradually decayed but remained in place until the mid-1970s, when ice-flows pushed the house off its foundation. At the time of its demise, White Shoal Light was the last surviving lighthouse on the James River, and one of only two privately owned lighthouses along the Chesapeake Bay. [1]
