Varsity Cup is the collective name for four South African rugby union competitions involving the top rugby playing universities in the country. It was launched in 2008, with eight teams participating in the Varsity Cup competition and each university's internal champions competing in the Koshuis Rugby Championships (now known as Res Rugby).
In 2008 UCT went down to Maties by 16–10 in the inaugural Varsity Cup final after topping the log at the end of the round robin stage of the competition. In 2009, UCT were once again prominent in the round robin stage, finishing second and qualifying for a second home semi-final. They lost the game to the NWU Pukke by 17–19.

The tournament (also known as the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International for sponsorship reasons) was the ninth season of the Varsity Cup, an annual inter-university rugby union competition featuring eight South African universities.
The Stellenbosch University Women's Rugby union team, commonly known as Maties Women, is the women's rugby union club representing Stellenbosch University based in Stellenbosch, Western Cape who compete in the FNB Women's Varsity Cup.

In 2008, Adriaanse represented Maties in the inaugural edition of the Varsity Cup. He made eight appearances in the competition, including their semi-final match – where they beat UP Tuks 47–44 [10] – and the final, where Maties was crowned the first champions of the competition by beating Western Cape rivals UCT Ikey Tigers. The club plays with the University of Cape Town Coat of Arms on the left breast of the playing jersey and the UCT Sport logo on the right. The UCT crest was designed in 1859 by Charles Davidson Bell, Surveyor-General of the Cape Colony at the time. Bell was an accomplished artist who also designed medals and the triangular Cape stamp.
