State Route 3 (SR 3) is a 120.67-mile-long (194.20 km) state highway located in southern Maine. It is a major interregional highway, connecting the Interstate 95 corridor to the Atlantic coast. The western terminus is at SR 8, SR 11 and SR 27 in Augusta and the eastern terminus is at SR 102 and SR 198 in Mount Desert.
These roads are chosen, funded, and maintained by the towns, or the county in unorganized areas. The vast majority of highways in the state fall under this category. These also represent the closest thing to county roads in the state, as Maine does not have signed county roads as other states such as New York do.
The southern terminus of US 201A is at US 2, US 201 and State Route 104 in Skowhegan. The northern terminus is at US 201 in Solon, a terminus it shares with State Route 8 . US 201A is also part of the Arnold Highway (named for Benedict Arnold ), established in 1931 over the original US 201.
Maine is divided into 16 counties and contains 482 municipalities consisting of cities, towns, and plantations. [2] In Maine, a plantation is an organized form of municipal self-government similar to but with less power than a town or a city.
State routes in Maine are highways within the Maine State Highway System that are signed and maintained by the Maine Department of Transportation, and not U.S. Routes or routes of the Interstate Highway System. Some parts of these roads are maintained by local government authorities. There are over 100 State routes.
