Diagnosis. The most common complaint about holistic scoring is the paucity of diagnostic information it provides. Scores of "passing"—or of "3" on a 4-point, 6-point, or 9-point scale—provide little concrete guidance for the student, the teacher, or the researcher.
A-plusses, if given, are usually assigned a value of 4.0 (equivalent to an A) due to the common assumption that a 4.00 is the best possible grade-point average, although 4.33 is awarded at some institutions. In francophone schools or CBE Schools from kindergarten to Grade 9, an alternative grading system is used instead of percentages and letter grades: numbers 1 through 4 are used (4 is excellent, 3 is good, 2 is average, and 1 is below average.
