The church was damaged during Sherman's March to the Sea during the American Civil War. [1] The building was temporarily used as a military hospital for wounded soldiers and, after the war, was used a women's seminiary. [1] In 1881, a new building was built to house the growing congregation. In 1886, the church was renamed Trinity Methodist Church.
The structure served as a Methodist church from its dedication in 1923 until 1978. In the 1950s the church had a mission for Japanese people. Trinity United Methodist Church is a church in Nutbush, Haywood County, Tennessee was founded in 1822. Planters allowed their slaves to attend church with them. The church is located south of Tennessee State Route 19. Part of the roadway was named "Tina Turner Highway" in 2002 in honor of popular singer Tina Turner, who lived as a child in Nutbush.
