A LM317 commonly requires a heat sink to prevent the operating temperature from rising too high. For large voltage differences, the power lost as heat can ultimately be greater than that provided to the circuit. This is the tradeoff for using linear regulators, which are a simple way to provide a stable voltage with few additional components.

English: Schematic of a 1A current regulator using LM317 adjustable voltage regulator. The open-circuit voltage assumes the output stage of the LM317 saturates at approximately 0.2 V and the adjust pin sinks enough current so that the voltage drop across the 1.25 ohm resistor is 1.25 V, which corresponds to the approximate temperature-compensated bandgap of silicon.
The following is a list of LM-series integrated circuits. Many were among the first analog integrated circuits commercially produced since late 1965; [1] some were groundbreaking innovations [opinion]. As of 2007, many are still being used. [2] The LM series originated with integrated circuits made by National Semiconductor.
Conversely, if the current through an ideal current source is determined by some other voltage or current in a circuit, it is called a dependent or controlled current source. Symbols for these sources are shown in Figure 2. The internal resistance of an ideal current source is infinite.
The LM317 series (+1.25 V) regulates positive voltages while the LM337 series (−1.25 V) regulates negative voltages. The adjustment is performed by constructing a potential divider with its ends between the regulator output and ground, and its centre-tap connected to the 'adjust' terminal of the regulator.
The Speedgoat beefs up protection with an internal support chassis, gusseted tongue to keep out debris, and toe bumper. It also has a Vibram Megagrip outsole, and the sixth version of the shoe has ...
A bandgap voltage reference is a voltage reference circuit widely used in integrated circuits. It produces an almost constant voltage corresponding to the particular semiconductor 's theoretical band gap , with very little fluctuations from variations of power supply , electrical load , time, temperature (as of 1999 [update] , they typically ...
