Valerian (Valeriana officinalis, Caprifoliaceae) is a perennial flowering plant native to Eurasia. It produces a catnip-like response in cats.. Valerian root is non-toxic but may cause side effects in excessive doses." but then goes on to say "Large doses (500+mg) or chronic use may result in stomach ache, apathy, and a feeling of mental dullness or mild depression"
Valerian (herb) – A study conducted in the UK in 2001 showed that valerian root significantly improved stress induced insomnia, but as a side effect greatly increased the vividness of dreams. This study concluded that valerian root affects REM due to natural chemicals and essential oils that stimulate serotonin and opioid receptors.
