Anderson with Sad Eye Joe in Knott's Berry Farm, 1941. Herbert S. Anderson (October 7, 1892 – August 20, 1960), known commonly as H. S. "Andy" Anderson, was an American woodcarver, one of the recognized masters of 20th-century woodcarving, most famous for Scandinavian flat-plane style of woodcarving and caricature carving.
Born in 1932, he grew up on a Texas ranch in Mason County and also ranched in Durango, Mexico. Mr. Zesch started working as an artist in 1954 and has made a living out of carving caricature figurines of Texas cowboys and cattlemen. The characteristic expression of the subjects of his work is an eyed rolling resignation.
