Harrisburg is located in southwestern Cabarrus County. It is bordered to the north by Concord and to the west by Charlotte in Mecklenburg County. North Carolina Highway 49 passes through the center of Harrisburg, leading northeast 57 miles (92 km) to Asheboro and southwest 13 miles (21 km) to the center of Charlotte.

Harrisburg station is a planned infill train station in Harrisburg, North Carolina, located on the North Carolina Railroad (NCRR). When it is completed, Amtrak's Carolinian and Piedmont will serve the station. [1] The station building will also have office space for the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Department. [1]

The Black Mountains, a subrange of the Blue Ridge, are the highest mountains in the Eastern United States, and culminate in Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet (2,037.3 m) above sea level. The Brushy Mountains – A much smaller and lower mountain range, the Brushy Mountains are located entirely within the state's borders.
North Carolina Highway 49A (NC 49A) was established after mainline NC 49 was rerouted onto US 64 from Asheboro to Ramseur, then northeast to Liberty; NC 49A continued the old alignment through Asheboro via Albemarle Avenue, Park Street, Salisbury Street, and Fayetteville Street. North of Asheboro it followed Old Liberty Road to Liberty.
