Broom grass has had a direct impact in preventing frequent landslides, helping retain ground moisture and fertility, and improving soil quality by reducing soil erosion. [12] Broom grass has the ability to crowd out invasive species when intercropped and is beneficial in retaining soil nutrients to regrow vegetation. [ 12 ]
Broom grass is a name used for different types of grass around the world. In tropical Asia it refers to Thysanolaena maxima of the family Poaceae; a tall, <3m, grass which is used for making brooms. In United States it refers to Andropogon glomeratus of the family Poaceae, a tall grass, growing to about 2m high.

It is native to the southeastern United States and as far north as the Great Lakes.
Species of broom popular in horticulture are purple broom (Chamaecytisus purpureus; purple flowers), Atlas broom (or Moroccan broom) (Argyrocytisus battandieri, with silvery foliage), dwarf broom (Cytisus procumbens), Provence broom (Cytisus purgans) and Spanish broom (Spartium junceum).
