Colorado counties. There are more than 1,500 properties and historic districts in the U.S. State of Colorado listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They are distributed over 63 of Colorado's 64 counties; only the City and County of Broomfield currently has none.
The current barn [9] was originally built in 1890 on the site of the ranch's original log barn and used timbers from its predecessor in the rear (northeast) elevation. An addition was built in 1936 and sandstone veneer was applied to the first story at that time. An arched rock mosaic sign reading "Rooney Ranch 1860", is found above the entrance.
The firm owned one of the largest ranches in the U.S., of 1,000,000 acres, the Luis Maria Baca Grant No. 4, near Crestone, Colorado in Saguache County, Colorado, in the San Luis Valley from 1951 until 1962. Retaining the mineral rights, Newhall sold it to Arizona-Colorado Land and Cattle Company in 1962. [8]
The site includes farm equipment, implements and tools, a period farmhouse, a recreated train depot and Uintah Railway exhibit with railroad cars, an engine and caboose, and historic horse-drawn road-building equipment.
