It was the 100th anniversary of the Theodore Roosevelt "teddy bear" that brought about Gund's next milestone. [17] In 2002, the United States Postal Service used a 1948 teddy bear of Gund to grace a 37 cent stamp in honor of the event. [17] Gund entered into a licensing agreement with Sesame Street in 2003. [18]
Since then, Snuffles has been produced in a number of sizes and colors, mostly between four inches and three feet tall. Available colors have included dark and light brown, white, tan, blue, pink, as well as rare green and yellow versions. In addition to the traditional teddy bear, Gund has made Snuffles into rattles, puppets and slippers.
Other products besides stuffed toys were made such as Little Golden Books, coloring books and miniature figurines. [10] Pound Puppies continued to be popular in the early 1990s. The toys were produced again in the early 2000s and included specific breeds of dog (as opposed to a generic model) along with barking sounds and movements. [11]
The very first Tatty Teddy was hand crafted by Linda Laverty of Worthing, West Sussex. The second generation Tatty Teddy, introduced in 2003, kept to the same overall design but with much finer fur. To coincide with the 2003 redesign, the 'Me to You' story was also published, describing how the teddy bear came to be in its current state.
Steiff was founded in 1880 by Margarete Steiff, a seamstress. [2] [3] She began making fabric elephants that were sold in her shop as pincushions.[3] [4] [5] However, children began playing with them, and in the years following she went on to design many other animal-themed toys for children, such as monkeys, donkeys, horses, camels, pigs, mice, dogs, cats, rabbits, and giraffes.
