The festival aims to source original film prints and present them as they were initially enjoyed- accompanied by live improvised music. These events take place in key venues in Bristol, such as The Bristol Old Vic, The Bristol Beacon, and The Watershed. Since 2009, the festival has awarded the Aardman Slapstick Awards, which were developed in 2008.
A fairground area may also be included in the event; The following is a geographic list of these gatherings, some of which are referred to as rallies or as festivals. The festival began in 1995 as Brief Encounters, a one-off event. Animated Encounters was set up in 2001 to celebrate and showcase animation. In 2006 the two festivals united as the Encounters Short Film Festival. [1] Special guests at past festivals have included Matt Groening [2] [3], Hayao Miyazaki [4], Ray Harryhausen [4] and Andrea Arnold [5].
