MINDS was founded in 1962, and remains one of the largest charities in Singapore. Over 600 staff and 2,400 beneficiaries are a part of MINDS. Two other organisations, the Association for Persons with Special Needs and Metta School were formed as an offshoot of MINDS.
In 1955, the Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) was founded and they established the Singapore School for the Deaf in 1963. [ 1 ] In 1972, the Youth Group for the Deaf was formed, which organized recreational activities , and two years later, the Total Communication (TC) philosophy was adopted.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA, to differentiate from the British RSPCA) was established in Singapore on 27 March 1876.A committee, consisting of W.H. Read and John Cameron, the editor of The Straits Times, was to oversee its activities with William Adamson acting as its Chair and D.E.A. Hervey as the Honorary Secretary. [1]
