Benson Ford Sr. (July 20, 1919 – July 27, 1978), originally named Edsel Ford Jr, was an American businessman in the automotive industry, a vice-president of Ford Motor Company, and national co-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
MV Benson Ford was constructed in 1924 at Great Lakes Engineering Works in Ecorse, Michigan, for the Ford Motor Company, [1] as one of two “state-of-the-art” bulk carriers [2] that were ordered by Henry Ford to transport raw materials such as coal and iron ore, the sister ship was MV Henry Ford II, which was built by the American Ship Building Company in Lorain, Ohio. [1]
The MV Kaye E. Barker is a self-discharging lake freighter owned and operated by the Interlake Steamship Company.She was originally built as the SS Edward B. Greene, and was later renamed SS Benson Ford before being sold to Interlake and named the MV Kaye E. Barker.
MV Benson Ford was named after Henry Ford's grandson, and was the 1924 flagship of the Ford Motor Company. The forward cabin and pilothouse is located on South Bass Island, Ohio , near the village of Put-in-Bay, Ohio a private summer residence owned by Bryan Kasper of Sandusky, Ohio .
Ford renamed the ship John Dykstra and she resumed trading on the Great Lakes on May 11, 1966. In 1983, Ford renamed the ship Benson Ford (2) after the retirement of the original S/S Benson Ford . In 1985, the vessel was renamed US.265808 (the name Benson Ford being passed on to a third vessel), and was withdrawn from service.
